What to read on Jummah

Surah Al-Kahf

Reciting Surah Al-Kahf on Friday is a recommended practice, with great light and reward promised. It may be read from Thursday sunset until Friday sunset.

Durood

The Prophet ﷺ encouraged sending blessings upon him in abundance on Fridays.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

Other recommended recitation

  • Istighfar: seek forgiveness from Allah often
  • Dhikr: SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar and La ilaha illallah
  • Qur'an recitation as much as you can
  • Personal dua, especially in the last hour before Maghrib

What to do on Jummah

  • Prepare the night before and plan to reach the mosque early
  • Stop buying and selling once the adhan for Jummah is called, and go to the remembrance of Allah
  • Do not talk, play with your phone or fidget during the khutbah. Switch your phone to silent
  • Do not step over people or push through the rows
  • Give sadaqah (charity) on Friday
  • Visit relatives, check on neighbours and bring the family together
  • Make dua. There is an hour on Friday in which prayers are accepted, which many scholars say is the last hour before sunset
  • Avoid fasting on Friday alone, unless it joins another day of fasting or falls on a regular fast

Jummah is obligatory for adult Muslim men. Women, travellers and the sick are excused but are welcome to pray Zuhr at home or attend if they wish.
